The broken woody stem is that of common barberry--we were unable to uproot a large shrub anchored deep in rock crevices. Once we broke off its stout prickly limbs already decorated with a multitude of fruit, we discovered a tiny choke cherry (Prunus virginiana), which had been completely obstructed by the alien shrub.
