This small tree belongs to the mainly Eurasiatic genus; ironwood
is the only North American species. Their picturesque "corrugated"
trunks are readily recognizable in rich woods and swamps. Hornbeams mostly would
not grow larger than tall shrubs. Those with blue-gray bark were segregated by
Fernald in var. virginiana.
