Gray birch is probably the commonest birch in the Boston area.
Its bark is of dull white-grayish color, not exfoliating.
Large and small dark triangles highlighting copious branch scars help
us easily recognize this tree from the distance. These dark areas together with
abundant lenticels make the white bark look gray.
