We would rather find a native black spruce in the forest, but we had to admit that those few spruces that we discovered around Three-Cornered and New Long Pond were alien red spruces. These were the promptly deciduous cones with entire, round scales that told us so. In a black spruce the cone scales would have erose margins, and cones would be persistent on branches for years.
